About the film |

A short film I created in early 2021 for the #YODOContest run by Hospice of Waterloo. The film explores an artistic interpretation of the experiences felt upon losing a loved one. I wrote the film as a passion project and aimed to convey personal experiences with loss while still allowing for individual interpretation. I experimented with different cinematic styles and eventually discovered a hybrid live action/animation style using rotoscoping techniques on the film's protagonist in order to convey the sense that a mourner feels disconnected from the world around them. I aimed for this film to be highly interpretable based on a viewer's personal life experiences and have received numerous different readings of the film - even presenting the film to my grandmother's movie club and hearing their personal views on my representation of death and grief. In producing this solo project, I was responsible for all creative and logistic roles including writing, directing, cinematography, editing, sound design and Foley, shot list and scheduling, casting and music acquisition. I spent several months meticulously editing the film and creating unique sounds and soundscapes to evoke specific emotional responses (e.g. the dirt falling into the grave at the beginning of the film). This film exemplifies my passion and love for cinema and storytelling and encompasses all of my filmmaking skills.
